Meet Jan Hassler

I am a trained Spiritual Director who is passionate about coming alongside others as they seek to pursue Jesus in deeper ways in their life stories. I have a core belief that everything points to something bigger and am honored to help others see and experience that truth.  I have been in Spiritual Direction for 25 years, completing my formal training with Christian Formation and Direction Ministries (CFDM) in 2012.

  • 25 years as a recipient of Spiritual Direction; 13 years providing Spiritual Direction

  • Deep love & respect for Holy Scripture

  • Faith + marriage redemption story

  • Former mega church staff leadership

  • On two church planting teams

  • Ignatian leadership

  • Enneagram practitioner

  • Retreat leadership

  • Founding Board Member, Spiritual Formation Society of Texas

  • The joy of my life is walking with others in their journey with God. I bring diverse spiritual and life experiences to my practice as a Spiritual Director. From choosing to follow Jesus at a young age, to later choosing to live life on my own terms for many years, God had His hand on me. During those rebellious years, I married and had a very rocky marriage story until both of us changed our priorities and focus. It is truly a story of redemption.

My spiritual journey has included being on staff at a mega church and moving cities to plant churches. I am a trained Ignatian leader and often walk with others through the Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius. I also have specialized Enneagram training and find it useful in spiritual transformation work. I am also familiar with, and knowledgeable about recovery work and related support strategies. I enjoy curating and leading various types of retreats and soul care opportunities for individuals, couples and small groups.

I feel honored that my clients often speak of how my patience, wisdom and discernment is a gift for those who long to deeply know and be known by God.

“Stand at the crossroads and look; Ask for the Ancient paths, Ask where the good way is and walk in it and you will find rest for your souls.”

— Jeremiah 6:16

What is Spiritual Direction?

The Spirit-driven process of transforming the inner self to be like Christ, leading to an outward life that naturally expresses Christ’s character, goodness, and power. It involves a holistic, lifelong transformation of the soul and heart, not just outward actions, to align with God’s intentions and the reality of His Kingdom.
— Dallas Willard

Spiritual Direction is helpful for specific times of decision and discernment, or as a lifelong spiritual discipline & practice. Will you choose to look for Jesus at the crossroads in your life?

It is easier to find guides, someone to tell you what to do than someone to be with you in a discerning, prayerful companionship as you work it out yourself. This is what Spiritual Direction is.
— Eugene Peterson

Often times Spiritual Direction helps you notice God in the everyday moments of life and experience wonder, mystery and play. Are you open to finding God in such things?

What I offer

Every journey and story hold moments of profound insight. Yet the true wonder isn’t simply that these epiphanies appear along the way, but that the journey itself becomes a continuous unfolding of them. A companion who helps discern these moments and recognizes God’s fingerprints can be invaluable. I invite you to explore how my many years of experience and training can support you or your team on this journey. Contact me to explore any of these offerings.

  • Spiritual Direction is a Biblical form of Christian soul care that dates back to the earliest days of the Church. It is a relationship organized around scripture, prayer and conversations. It is an accompanied journey of the soul with the goal of spiritual renewal and transformation in Christ. I am a member of a professional organization of Christ based Spiritual Directors (CSDA). Spiritual Direction sessions are typically 1:1 and offered on a monthly cadence with each session lasting about 1 hour.

  • Jesus says, “Get away with me. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace.” (Matt. 11:28-30, The MSG)

If you are seeking renewal, perhaps now is the right time. I partner with clients to curate and facilitate retreats and daily programs, offering a unique space for soul care, deep rest and renewal for your small group or team.

  • I co-lead intensive cohorts with Matt Kessler, a Spiritual Director, Coach and ordained minister at Revelo. The 10 month cohort supports leaders in strengthening their faith, building emotional resilience, and fostering stronger relationships.

  • This is a personal guidance program for yourself or your small group through this ancient transformative prayer curriculum. This unique retreat-in-place program invites you to spend 1 hour each day in daily prayer. Additionally, one-hour Spiritual Direction sessions are held every other week. The full curriculum typically runs for nine months.

  • I have specialized training in the harmony triad model of the Enneagram and find it useful for helping others live fully into who God created them to be. I also have extensive exposure and knowledge in the recovery world. These are tools that are helpful for people to find freedom and connect with God.

Who or what is forming you?

Although a Spiritual Director may have many natural gifts, trusting in their competency or expertise is not the main objective. Instead, A Spiritual Director ought to trust God in the Directee, and in the Holy Spirit working in and through them. The most helpful qualities a Spiritual Director has to offer is a heart surrendered to God and a willingness to listen to God with their Directee.

  • I met Jan many years ago at my church. One of her greatest gifts is the way she cherishes another’s journey in Christ with deep humility. Her marriage and relationships have modeled authenticity in a world that desperately needs it. Over the years she has offered me wise counsel, comfort, loving rebukes, and unconditional friendship. Jan is a beautiful, soulful woman and friend.

    Jessica

  • I first met Jan in 2002 when my husband and I were new believers. She immediately impressed me with her quiet confidence and calming presence. Jan is trustworthy, wise, and compassionate, with a rare gift of hospitality. In those early years I came to consider her my spiritual mother. When I began training as a spiritual director myself, I asked Jan to be mine. Whether through Skype, phone, or retreat, she has walked with me through life’s deepest desires, pains, and questions. She listens without judgment, holding those tender places with mercy. Jan has truly been a lifeline to me.

    Brandi

  • Spiritual Direction with Jan has been such a blessing! She helps me slow down in the busyness of life to listen for God’s voice. Our sessions give me a safe place to share burdens and struggles and be gently guided back into God’s presence. Every time with Jan refreshes and encourages my soul.

    Rachel

  • Jan has been a friend and mentor for 17 years. When we first met, she walked with me through difficult family struggles and anchored my marriage in hope. Together, she and her husband modeled biblical wisdom, grace, and hospitality. Through studies and prayer, Jan helped lay a stronger foundation for healthy communication in my marriage. I call her my spiritual mom — her genuine love for the Lord and gift of hospitality have been vital in my healing and growth.

    Heather

  • Listening with love, leading by example, praying with discernment, offering wisdom, and modeling generosity — this all describes my friend Jan. Her presence is steady, humble, and grace-filled.

    Leigh

  • I had the privilege of serving alongside Jan Hassler at Rockhills Church, where her wisdom and gift for spiritual direction were invaluable to me, our leadership and our congregation. She creates safe, grace-filled spaces for people to listen to God and discern His leading. Anyone who journeys with Jan will encounter a compassionate guide who points them deeper into life with Jesus.

Freely give / freely receive

I choose to not have a traditional fee structure for the services I provide. While there is value in the ministry of presence and Spiritual Direction, I prefer a "freely give/freely receive" model. This keeps things in the realm of grateful gift giving and ministry as opposed to market value.

I will not be collecting a fee from you, but I do ask that you spend time with God and consider donating to The Spiritual Formation Society of Texas. It is a non-profit I am on the core team of, and we provide retreats, training, classes, studies, etc. throughout Texas for people to "come to the table to taste and see that the Lord is good." (Psalm 34:8). The Formation Society is comprised of pastors and Spiritual Directors I know and trust. Because of donations like yours, the SFSTX is able to have a sliding fee scale and offer scholarships to people who otherwise might not be able to participate in our offerings of drawing close to the heart of Jesus.

Fees for meeting with a trained Spiritual Director one on one typically run between $40-125/hour. I truly appreciate your prayer and donation in this regard.
